Tuesday, May 12: After a HW Check of linear relationships, we introduced topic 3, the slope of a line.  Time was then given to practice.

Also, Period 4 had time to begin Topic 4 (Slope/Y-intercept). The assignment with this topic is due on Friday.

Expect me to check the slope HW on Thursday!

Thursday, May 14: We checked the HW on slope, and proceded into topic 4, slope-y-intercept form of a line. Time was given to work on the HW, which is a hand-in due tomorrow.

Friday, May 15: We covered the final topic of the unit, Arithmetic Sequences. An assignment was given, completed and graded in class. FOr HW, study for the test!

Test next Tuesday, May 19 on the linear equations unit

LTF Exam – Friday, May 8 (this will not count towards your grade, however, the review will serve you well for our final)

Tuesday, May 5: After a HW check of Topic 5 (using square roots to solve quadratics),  we reviewed linear functions (y=mx + b). Time was then given to work on the review package provided last week.

Thursday, May 6: Today was primarily a review class, in preparation for Friday’s exam. The remainder of the review package doesn’t necessarily have to be entirely completed, but, the questions within it should prepare you well for whats coming.

For tomorrow, students should complete pages 2,3,4 and 5.

I will be checking.

Friday, May 8: LTF Exam today, next week we will be wrapping up the quadratics unit.  HW – Carnegie.

Grade breakout for report card 6: If your progress report grade is lower than you like, there is still 60% to be decided (Carnegie and the unit test),

10% Quizzes

30% Assignments

20% Carnegie

40% Quadratics unit final

English, week of 5.4-5.8.2009 May 5, 2009

This week in English we are continuing a unit on poetry.

Students have two mini-projects to turn in by Friday, May 8:

  • End of Year Reflection paragraph — this will be bound in an 8th grade class book
  • Quilt fabric collage — this will be placed in the binder which will accompany the 8th grade “This I Believe” quilt in the library.

English classes will take the LTF (Laying the Foundation) end-of-course exam in class this Thursday and Friday.  The purpose of this exam is to help prepare students for the AP exams they may take in high school for college credit.  The LTF test is not for a grade in my class, nor does it affect their placement in high school next year.  It is, however, beneficial for students on a college-bound track so they have familiarity with the AP exams.

Math – Week of May 4 May 5, 2009

Monday, May 4: We reviewed how to fill a table of values given a relation rule, and how to create the rule given the table. For HW, complete both handouts on this topic, as we will be moving on to new work tomorrow.

Tuesday, May 5: We reviewed making a rule from a table, and then introduced graphing the relationship. For Thursday, all classes should be done both pages of the handout “introduction to relations”.

Thursday, May 7: We finished graphing linear equations, and in the case of period 4, began examining the slope of a line. For Tuesday, complete the two worksheets on linear relationships (“Representing functions as ordered pairs” and “Graphing miles-km”). I will be having a HW check.

Algebra: Carnegie – Cycle 5 Due May 13

Monday, April 27: We continued topic 4, solving quadratics equations using graphing. Those who did not finish the assignment in class will have a chance later in the week. It is my plan to not introduce any new topics this week while TAKS testing is going on. However, tomorrow, be ready to write a quiz on topics 1-3.

Wednesday, April 29: Today we wrote a quiz on quadratics. Pick away on the review package and Carnegie when you get the time…

Friday, May 1: We pressed on with the quadratics unit,  covering topic 5: “Solving quadratic equations using square roots”. HW from the text was assigned, Pg 655: #3,5,7,11,17,23,27,33,37,41,43. I will be checking this on Tuesday.

Math:

Monday, April 27: We reviewed the solutions to the misleading graphs excersises before moving on to the final unit on relations and functions. We began topic 1, introducing some preliminary ideas, but no HW is assigned. On Thursday, students will be writing a brief, open-book stats final.

Thursday, April 30: As promised, we wrote the Stats unit final. No HW…good luck on TAKS…see you Monday.
